Matthew Cowan's work to date emerges from the rich folk traditions of Britain and Europe, playing with the humour and ritual of folk celebration and performance, and drawing on visions of the topsy turvy medieval world of Cockaigne. Recent work has tapped into the wonder of evolving ancient traditions existing in contemporary society, and an English sense of unease and joy when confronted with homegrown indigenous culture.

Originally from New Zealand, for 2009 Matthew Cowan was the first artist in residence at Cecil Sharp House, the headquarters of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.
