On the 22nd of October 2011, Coachwerks is hosting two unique workshops led by radical instrument builder, Yuri Landman. In four hours you can build your own electric string instrument. In the afternoon you can build the Home Swinger, follwed by the White Eagle in the evening. These workshops require no special skills.
The following day will consist of performances from the workshop participants, with support from local musicians and instrumentalists.

The World Reflected in a Drop of Water: (Self)-Portrait in Making Solo Performance.
Performer and author, Yael Karavan explores some of the tools developed in her solo performance process. Drawing on elements of Dance, physical theatre, Butoh and mime, she explores some of the key issues for the solo performer such as ‘presence’, and how to relate creatively to material, objects and space, particularly within the challenges of a solo performance. She uses a number of rich approaches to facilitate the imaginative journey for performer and their audience in the creation of ‘self-portrait’ in solo performance.\
About Yael Karavan
Performer and Director Yael Karavan was born in Israel and grew up in Florence, Paris and London. At the age of 13 she began an acting career in the National Theatre, television and films in Israel. In 1995 she began travelling through Europe, N.Y, Brazil and Japan searching to develop a contemporary physical language of expression bridging between east and west, dance and acting. Yael has studied with master-teachers and performers from all over the world including: Anton Adassinski and Tanya Khabarova from Russian theatre DEREVO, Philippe Gaulier, Philippe Genty, Monica Pagnieux, Jerzy Winnicki from the Grotowski Centre, Nigel Charnock from DV8, Sue Morrison (North American traditional Clown), Ricardo Puccetti from ‘Lume Teatro- Brazil and Butoh masters Kazuo Ohno, Tadashi Endo, Carlotta Ikeda, Yumiko Yoshioka, Akiko Motofuji and more. She has collaborated amongst others with Ephia from Djalma primordial science, Linda Remahl, Fran Barbe and Marie Gabriel Rotie.
Her work is often described as visual poetry, whilst constantly balancing on the fine line between the tragic and the comic. She has created and performed 5 solo shows, touring world wide, and in 2006 was awarded the TEATRONETO prize for best performance with her solo The Way Home. She has been, amongst others, member of Derevo physical theatre company, Mamu Dance Theatre of Tadashi Endo, Ten-Pen Chi of Yumiko Yoshioka and Adapt- Theatre Picture Collision as well as collaborating with various artists, actors and dancers internationally.

Ensemble will be leading monthly week-end workshops in Dance, Movement, Physical theatre, Site Specific based work and Music at Coachwerks.
The workshop:
A performers training improvisation and presence.
'I see the body as the most primal tool of communication and as such feel the need to combine various dance and performance disciplines in order to broaden its possibilities. I am developing methods to extend the boundaries of dance as well as stimulate the imagination of the body for both the performers and their audience. In the process of my work I explore gestures that come from within the body and thus extract movement that is beyond form and shape, but which contains life and emotion.' Y.K
The beauty of the performer is his/her pleasure to perform. Drawing on elements of Dance,

Yael is offering a number of rich approaches to facilitate the imaginative journey and the pleasure to rediscover our 'tool' through games, improvisations and exploration of the infinite possibilities that are hidden within ourselves.

The Karavan Ensemble Presents a Two Day Workshop on Performing Duets.
It will take place on Saturday and Sunday 21, 22 of August from 11 to 5 at Coachwerks.
The workshop will be jointly led by Tamar Daly and Rachel Champion, and suitable for all levels of experience.
This two day workshop will focus on developing skills for performance using movement and text, while focusing on working with a partner. A series of exercises will lead to the production of personal movement material and text, which will then be used to create short duets. The partner work will include elements of contact improvisation, and will develop an awareness of the spaces we create and share. In weaving the material together we will explore different approaches to composition, considering harmony and tension in relation to the material, the space and to one another.
Tamar has been making her own work for the stage since 1999, along side performing in the work of other makers of experimental performance. Her work is a blend of dance and theatre, with a more recent focus on new media. Recent productions include the solo work Mademoiselle Y, dance installation work Come and Go by Feet Speak productions, collaborative work Your Face Your Fortune with live artist Sara Popowa, and physical theatre performance A Ship of Fools by Yael Karavan. Before arriving to the U.K three years ago, Tamar worked extensively in France and Israel, collaborating among others with cinematographer Dana Tal, dancer Chloe Hernandez, and working with choreographer Emmanuel Grivet. Her teaching draws on her experience as a performer and is based on her personal ongoing training. It is geared toward a body which is highly 'present' and responsive, and towards a diverse and changeable movement language. Influential teachers include Julyen Hamilton, Meg Stuart, Ohad Naharin, K.J Holmes, Kirstie Simpson and Laurie Booth. She is a graduate of an MA course in dance at the University of Chichester, and currently lives and works in Brighton.
Rachel trained at Dartington College of Arts in Visual Performance. She has been involved in many forms of performance ranging from Site-specific work, Physical Theatre, Contemporary Dance, Visual Art and Improvised Performance. She has brown hair and size 4 feet. Rachel enjoys solitude and company. She likes the smell in the air after rain has fallen. She enjoys finding someone has left a secret note with interesting handwriting. Rachel stores memories like food and often gets to places without remembering the journey. Rachel likes to be liked but not by everyone. She has been a performer with the Karavan ensemble since March 2010, and took in part in A Ship of Fools at the Brighton Fringe Festival. She finds being a fool a rather natural occupation…

Butoh is an avant garde dance philosophy/method that was created in Japan at the end of the 50's by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. It is not a technique but rather an approach to dance which stems from within ourselves and connects us to our essence as well as to nature, the universe, our ancestors, the elements and the cycles of life and death.
Because of its Asian origins Butoh is very deeply connected to Buddhism and Shintoism. The main elements that it explores are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites. A Ship of Fools
A rare opportunity to work with internationally acclaimed Dance Theatre artist following the success of a ship of fools at the Brighton fringe Yael Karavan is offering a 2 day intensive workshop on the this theme.
The key concept of this work is that we each have a ship of fools within us. These fools represent the different traits that shape our personality. Each one of them, at a time, leads the boat: the lover, the thinker, the joker... This is a theme that I have been exploring through my dance research for many years, constantly asking 'who is dancing?' We have so many characters within us that try to express themselves. I have thus developed methods of finding these 'traits' through the use of character-based work, searching to enable these various fools within us to dance their stories, like a journey within our own archetypes.
...and one day looking inside I saw in that space between the belly and the chest a little ship from which my inner fools were leading my life....

The first in the series will be an introduction to Yael Karavan's physical practice.

1st workshop in The Karavan Ensemble workshop series:
'I see the body as the most primal tool of communication and as such feel the need to combine various dance and performance disciplines in order to broaden its possibilities. I am developing methods to extend the boundaries of dance as well as stimulate the imagination of the body for both the performers and their audience. In the process of my work I explore gestures that come from within the body and thus extract movement that is beyond form and shape, but which contains life and emotion.' Y.K
The beauty of the performer is his/her pleasure to perform. Drawing on elements of Dance, physical theatre, Butoh and mime, Yael Karavan explores some of the key issues for the performer, and is offering a palette of tools and possibilities in the creative process exploring ‘presence’, metamorphoses, rhythm, intention, imagery and counterpoint as well as how to relate creatively to material, objects and space. 'As performers our being is our tool of expression and as such it is a rather complex tool'. Yael is offering a number of rich approaches to facilitate the imaginative journey and the pleasure to rediscover our 'tool' through games, improvisations and exploration of the infinite possibilities that are hidden within ourselves.
This workshop will be followed by A ship of Fools workshop if you are curious to discover your own inner fools in July at Coachwerks.

Karinthy - There is No Art Without Science 18.06.10 - 19.06.10
"Karinthy is one of those playful artists," a friend wrote. "His playfulness consists of smashing up his toys to see what is inside them." He played like an adolescent boy: he was concerned with Unknowable Life, the grotesque situations of everyday life, the absurdities of middle-class existence - a curious mixture of humour and tragedy.Karinthy Frigyes was a Hungarian writer and humorist who proposed the now famous hypothesis of six degrees of separation. He developed a benign brain tumour and wrote a book ‘A Journey Round my Skull’ to document his experience of the illness and the operation. He jokingly referred to himself as a failed ‘tumorist’, and died a year later of a stroke whilst tying his shoelace. It is this book, an extraordinary piece of medical testimony from a patient’s - and an artist’s - point of view, that inspires the material for the show.
In this feisty and bizarre female double act, two forgotten clown-like characters retell the epic story of Karinthy’s life, death and works and battle it out on the sides of art and science, to see who will become the most successful in the eyes of the audience, whilst the loser will discover the true meaning of failure.

After the first piece there was dead silence, until someone said “maybe we should clap now”, and everyone did. It wasn’t reluctance to applaud but the sheer power of the performance that left the entire audience unable to move or speak. Extending the moment when someone says “I’m leaving you” in a controlled and beautifully worked sequence of movement and expression, Daniel Somerville showed exquisite control and emotion. It was breathtaking stuff – impossible to recreate in words, as you might expect from a journalist turned performance artist. It’s as hard to categorise as it is to describe, because although you can refer to Butoh from Japan as an inspiration, labelling doesn’t do the piece justice.
The words were there too in the third piece My Egypt Stories which is a strange but effective fusion of dance, spoken word and operatic song. And the second explored the experience of loneliness, crafting and exposing feeling through the movement and music. Somerville makes sparing use of simple accessories, the dry ice, incense, the bubbles, white body make-up to create a multi-sensual more than a multi-media experience, everything tuned to work together. The music, soundtrack, again call it what you will, was evocative, intricate and beautiful to the ear. At the beginning of the second piece he says “I’m not a dancer, an actor or a composer...”, but the works encompass all the skills and magic of these professions while still, somehow, slipping in-between their definitions to produce something that was new, powerful and fresh.

"It's been nearly two whole years since I started learning the entire script of Richard II and rehearsing it. I've missed out on lots and lots of things I really wanted to go to, because of the commitment I made to realising this dream. It's been heart breaking at times and I've missed everyone in my life sooooo much.
But, we have finally given birth to the play and will be premièring it in Brighton for the Festival this May before taking it on the road for a year long European tour!
