Learn safe and efficient use of simple hand tools to create your own wooden spoons and spatulas.
Starting with freshly cut 'green' wood you will be guided through various carving techniques using saws, hatchets, whittling (carving) knives and spoon knives to create one or more items to take away with you.

No previous experience required, all tools and materials provided. Ages 12 and above. Under sixteens must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

In the afternoon you can build the Home Swinger, follwed by the White Eagle in the evening. These workshops require no special skills.

Dang wind had given my chrysalises a rough introduction to the outdoors. When I got there they was only a single strand of tape between them and oblivion.

Though I do wonder who would have found them if they had blown away... and what they could have imagined.

Also gets me in the mood for a tape person kite. I'm due to be taping a very pregnant friend of mine in the next few weeks. She'd make an awesome balloon.

The sculptures of Coachwerks artist-in-residence Josephine Dimbleby will be taking over the front area outside 19 Hollingdean Terrace for the duration of the May festival. Every day, you’ll find her scouring the streets, harvesting discarded rubbish from the pavements and roads to use in transforming her ‘human chrysalises’.

After a month of transmogrification inside the tape shells, the rebirth of a new creature is likely to occur conveniently during a performance at the final show on Tuesday 31^st May, 6pm onwards. All are welcome to attend for live music, carousing and BBQ.

The month-long metamorphosis of the sculptures from simple shell to their elaborate conclusion will be captured on time-lapse video, which will be available to view on this blog from the beginning of June.

Community workshops during May

Josephine is keen to teach others the simple techniques she uses to make her sculptures. (Please note – under-14s are welcome to join the workshops, but must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.)

Tape people workshop: Come along on Sunday 8^th May, 1-5pm to learn how to make your own tape person or object. Once we’ve made our tape sculptures, we’ll take them on a mini-tour, exploring how we can place them in the environment to make street art. All our masterpieces will be photographed for display on the Coachwerks website.

Suggested donation: £3

Chrysalis workshop: On Sunday 15^th May, 1-5pm, Josephine will be hosting a workshop to show you how to make a chrysalis for a creature of your own design – even better, she’ll show you how your chrysalis can be set to burst open of its own accord, releasing your bizarre little critter into the wilds several days later. Intrigued? Make sure to be there!

What is it?

A training ground for unrealised ideas.
A roomful of tiny services for the improvement and strengthening of tiny ideas e.g. there might be a desk where you can check your idea for viability, a naming terminal where you can work on your brand with someone in remote Norway, somebody with a typewriter who can help distill your idea's value proposition to less than ten words in less than ten minutes, and space for attendees to provide services too. We're going to try to get every service that an unrealised idea might need in one room.
On arrival you will be welcomed by a receptionist and handed an exercise book for your idea. The receptionist might give you a recommended course of action for when you´re in the room "speak to Graeme, then go to the naming terminal, etc" and you'll agree with him or her what you want to leave with, like "I want to find three people I can call next week to move this forward, a name for the product and an accountant".

Who is it for?

Whether you have an unrealised idea and bring it along in your head, or an existing early-stage business that isn't fully 'there' yet, the event is open to anybody with an idea from Brighton & Hove, and the surrounding East Sussex area.
Big, existing businesses can have unrealised ideas too, and it would be great if there were at least a few people in that situation there too.
It is about bringing a fragile little idea along, you take it through a process and take it home with you again.
It's a drop-in event, but please allow an hour or two to get something real out of it.
No observers, or people who want to start something but don't know what (sorry).

Why?

Innovative things are sometimes too small to register on the radar for government, or funders, or the media. Sometimes so small that they are only a tiny, neglected idea in the back of someone's head. But if you cluster together people with little innovative ideas, the clustering can help to magnify them.
MIGHT is supported by the East Sussex and Brighton & Hove Innovation and Growth Team, programmed by Matt Weston (MAKE ROOM NOW) and produced by Jenny Reina (hunter-gatherers) and Graeme Walker (Coachwerks), in close collaboration with Werkshop.

Who'd've thought it'd take so much sugar? We used two recipes in the end - one from a nice old book I was given as a present called Taste of Britain and the other from a bit of paper attached to the net the oranges came in. And it took around 6 hours for us all to finish. And the result - I am happy! Bring on the toast!

Colour Out of Space Presents : Primate Arena

PRIMATE ARENA – Israel’s first consistent platform for a wide palette of experimental and improvised music touches down at Coachwerks to collaborate with a clutch of like-minded souls from the Brighton: Blood Stereo, Hobo Sonn and Bolide.

Hosted by Eran Sachs and Alex DROOL, PRIMATE ARENA is a bi-weekly freeform happening for experimental & out muzak events (mostly in Tel Aviv), dedicated to Psych, EAI, Noise, Speech/Sonic/Concrete Poetry, Avant Rock, post millennial obscurities, pre millennial obscurities, the history of 20th century experimental music & other adventurous ventures.

Over the past three years they have created a platform - central to Tel Aviv's now vibrant, thriving scene - that has nurtured a community of adventurous local musicians including Maya Dunietz and Yoni Silver and hosted visiting internationals such as Jérôme Noetinger, Arnaud Rivière, Ignatz Schick, Daniel Padden, Bob Ostertag and many others.

Also performing this evening will be local free vocalisation duo HereHareHere and from Israel Daniel Davidovsky & Nicoteen

Daniel is a composer, musician, and an active artist in the improvisation scene in Israel (electro-acoustic, experimental, noise). He is a member of a number of ensembles and collaborates with artists from Israel and abroad. Davidovsky’s work explores the connections between improvisation routines in different musical environments and the development of performative tools. His work deals with "controlled randomness" in various contexts creating a unique improvisational language in music and sound.

Nicoteen is a unique voice in the Israeli independent music scene. Her music ranges from noisy and evasive instrumentals to sweet home-made pop. She is an important part of the Israeli record label Ak-Duck and since 2005 has released two solo E.P.s and a solo album was released in the summer of 2010. She is also half of the experimental synth-pop duo Cassexxe Vibrato. In their collaboration, they explore the merging of their two very different vocal expression, creating sound-scapes of a ritualistic nature from which coherent songs occasionally emerge.

White Night @ Coachwerks : A Light through the night

Collecting lamps of all sizes and shapes from various house holds in Hollingdean, The Karavan Ensemble will create a collection of little poetic moments spanning from installation/live art & performance pieces intertwined with more interactive elements, weaving a journey through visual imaginary, intimate encounters and absurd realities. On the white Night Coachwerks will be transformed, illuminated only by these orphan lamps and lights creating a new landscape and atmosphere at the venue in which the audience will unexpectedly meet with another reality.....

The audience will be picked up from the corn exchange by The Big Lemon Bus, the performance will already start on the bus.
The bus will leave 15 minutes before the hour from 8.45 until 23.45, the interventions will start at 9pm at coachwerks and will run for 20 to 30 minutes every hour ending with a final show at midnight.

The Karavan Ensemble is a group of international performers arching between dance, music, physical theatre, visual live art and text based work. This mixture of nationalities and backgrounds will enable a wide variety of spoken and performative languages.

Butoh is an avant garde dance philosophy/method that was created in Japan at the end of the 50ese by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. Butoh is not a technique but rather an approach to dance which stems from within us and is connecting us to our essence as well as to nature, the universe, our ancestors, the elements and the cycles of life and death. Because of its Asian origins Butoh is very deeply connected to Buddhism and Shintoism. The main elements that it explores are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic movement and archetypal expression.

The World Reflected in a Drop of Water: (Self)-Portrait in Making Solo Performance.

Performer and author, Yael Karavan explores some of the tools developed in her solo performance process. Drawing on elements of Dance, physical theatre, Butoh and mime, she explores some of the key issues for the solo performer such as ‘presence’, and how to relate creatively to material, objects and space, particularly within the challenges of a solo performance. She uses a number of rich approaches to facilitate the imaginative journey for performer and their audience in the creation of ‘self-portrait’ in solo performance.\

About Yael Karavan

Performer and Director Yael Karavan was born in Israel and grew up in Florence, Paris and London. At the age of 13 she began an acting career in the National Theatre, television and films in Israel. In 1995 she began travelling through Europe, N.Y, Brazil and Japan searching to develop a contemporary physical language of expression bridging between east and west, dance and acting. Yael has studied with master-teachers and performers from all over the world including: Anton Adassinski and Tanya Khabarova from Russian theatre DEREVO, Philippe Gaulier, Philippe Genty, Monica Pagnieux, Jerzy Winnicki from the Grotowski Centre, Nigel Charnock from DV8, Sue Morrison (North American traditional Clown), Ricardo Puccetti from ‘Lume Teatro- Brazil and Butoh masters Kazuo Ohno, Tadashi Endo, Carlotta Ikeda, Yumiko Yoshioka, Akiko Motofuji and more. She has collaborated amongst others with Ephia from Djalma primordial science, Linda Remahl, Fran Barbe and Marie Gabriel Rotie.
Her work is often described as visual poetry, whilst constantly balancing on the fine line between the tragic and the comic. She has created and performed 5 solo shows, touring world wide, and in 2006 was awarded the TEATRONETO prize for best performance with her solo The Way Home. She has been, amongst others, member of Derevo physical theatre company, Mamu Dance Theatre of Tadashi Endo, Ten-Pen Chi of Yumiko Yoshioka and Adapt- Theatre Picture Collision as well as collaborating with various artists, actors and dancers internationally.

Following the success of A Ship of Fools at the Brighton fringe, Yael Karavan and The Karavan
Ensemble will be leading monthly week-end workshops in Dance, Movement, Physical theatre, Site Specific based work and Music at Coachwerks.

The workshop:

A performers training improvisation and presence.

'I see the body as the most primal tool of communication and as such feel the need to combine various dance and performance disciplines in order to broaden its possibilities. I am developing methods to extend the boundaries of dance as well as stimulate the imagination of the body for both the performers and their audience. In the process of my work I explore gestures that come from within the body and thus extract movement that is beyond form and shape, but which contains life and emotion.' Y.K

The beauty of the performer is his/her pleasure to perform. Drawing on elements of Dance,
physical theatre, Butoh and mime, Yael Karavan explores some of the key issues for the performer, and is offering a palette of tools and possibilities in the creative process exploring ‘presence’, metamorphoses, rhythm, intention, imagery and counterpoint as well as how to relate creatively to material, objects and space. 'As performers our being is our tool of expression and as such it is a rather complex tool'. Yael is offering a number of rich approaches to facilitate the imaginative journey and the pleasure to rediscover our 'tool' through games, improvisations and exploration of the infinite possibilities that are hidden within ourselves.

The Karavan Ensemble Presents a Two Day Workshop on Performing Duets.

It will take place on Saturday and Sunday 21, 22 of August from 11 to 5 at Coachwerks.

The workshop will be jointly led by Tamar Daly and Rachel Champion, and suitable for all levels of experience.
This two day workshop will focus on developing skills for performance using movement and text, while focusing on working with a partner. A series of exercises will lead to the production of personal movement material and text, which will then be used to create short duets. The partner work will include elements of contact improvisation, and will develop an awareness of the spaces we create and share. In weaving the material together we will explore different approaches to composition, considering harmony and tension in relation to the material, the space and to one another.

Tamar has been making her own work for the stage since 1999, along side performing in the work of other makers of experimental performance. Her work is a blend of dance and theatre, with a more recent focus on new media. Recent productions include the solo work Mademoiselle Y, dance installation work Come and Go by Feet Speak productions, collaborative work Your Face Your Fortune with live artist Sara Popowa, and physical theatre performance A Ship of Fools by Yael Karavan. Before arriving to the U.K three years ago, Tamar worked extensively in France and Israel, collaborating among others with cinematographer Dana Tal, dancer Chloe Hernandez, and working with choreographer Emmanuel Grivet. Her teaching draws on her experience as a performer and is based on her personal ongoing training. It is geared toward a body which is highly 'present' and responsive, and towards a diverse and changeable movement language. Influential teachers include Julyen Hamilton, Meg Stuart, Ohad Naharin, K.J Holmes, Kirstie Simpson and Laurie Booth. She is a graduate of an MA course in dance at the University of Chichester, and currently lives and works in Brighton.

Rachel trained at Dartington College of Arts in Visual Performance. She has been involved in many forms of performance ranging from Site-specific work, Physical Theatre, Contemporary Dance, Visual Art and Improvised Performance. She has brown hair and size 4 feet. Rachel enjoys solitude and company. She likes the smell in the air after rain has fallen. She enjoys finding someone has left a secret note with interesting handwriting. Rachel stores memories like food and often gets to places without remembering the journey. Rachel likes to be liked but not by everyone. She has been a performer with the Karavan ensemble since March 2010, and took in part in A Ship of Fools at the Brighton Fringe Festival. She finds being a fool a rather natural occupation…

An improvisation based dance class which combines contemporary dance principles with sensation motivated movement. The class is suitable to those experienced in dance as well as those not experienced but with a willingness to move. 3 Days Hard Work : Coachwerks Volunteer Week Update

We've been getting busy this week with a couple of fat projects: making a start on the new kitchen and cleaning up the Small Studio and back yard. Loads of people have showed up which is great, loads of energy - it's all happening!

Has anyone ever seen the back yard look so clean?

We're celebrating the start of the summer, the end of volunteer week and all the new things that are to come. There'll be short films, comfy seats, open studios and all our wicked people around to show you a good time.

VOLUNTEER WEEK 5-10 JULY

We need your help! We're trying really really hard to get Coachwerks nicer and a better place to be. In April we got some money to make a new kitchen, so we've got to knock down the old utility room and get rid of the rubbish. While we're at it, we're going to clear out the back yard and make the space a bit more ship shape; a lick o' paint here, a dab o' varnish there.

We welcome anyone who'd like to come and help us out in any way whatsoever. Come and bring your old clothes, any construction tools you've got (electric screwdrivers, hammers etc, all labelled with your name) and we shall supply you with good times, friendly people, fun stuff to do and endless cups of warm brown liquid, known as tea. (milk, sugar optional).

And at the end of it, on Saturday the 10th, to celebrate it all, we're having a party and you're all invited. There'll be music and a BBQ and and and, all sorts of great things.

Yeah? Yeah!

Matthew Cowan Residency, July 2010

Matthew Cowan's work to date emerges from the rich folk traditions of Britain and Europe, playing with the humour and ritual of folk celebration and performance, and drawing on visions of the topsy turvy medieval world of Cockaigne. Recent work has tapped into the wonder of evolving ancient traditions existing in contemporary society, and an English sense of unease and joy when confronted with homegrown indigenous culture.

Originally from New Zealand, for 2009 Matthew Cowan was the first artist in residence at Cecil Sharp House, the headquarters of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Butoh Night

Butoh is an avant garde dance philosophy/method that was created in Japan at the end of the 50's by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. It is not a technique but rather an approach to dance which stems from within ourselves and connects us to our essence as well as to nature, the universe, our ancestors, the elements and the cycles of life and death.

Because of its Asian origins Butoh is very deeply connected to Buddhism and Shintoism. The main elements that it explores are metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures and movements and thus allowing us to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression.

"In other forms of dance, such as flamenco or classical dance. the movements are derived from a fixed technique; they are imposed from the outside and are conventional in form. In my case, it's the contrary, my dance is far removed from conventions and techniques... it is the unveiling of the inner life." Tatsumi Hijikata

A Ship of Fools

A rare opportunity to work with internationally acclaimed Dance Theatre artist following the success of a ship of fools at the Brighton fringe Yael Karavan is offering a 2 day intensive workshop on the this theme.

Are you curious to discover who are the fools who inhabit you?
What is their story, existence, life to tell?

The workshop will offer a warm up composed from a variety of training tools; stretching, strength, centre, spontaneity, imagination, presence, physical awareness, work with objects and rhythm and will propose various approaches to discovering your fools in a creative atmosphere.

The key concept of this work is that we each have a ship of fools within us. These fools represent the different traits that shape our personality. Each one of them, at a time, leads the boat: the lover, the thinker, the joker... This is a theme that I have been exploring through my dance research for many years, constantly asking 'who is dancing?' We have so many characters within us that try to express themselves. I have thus developed methods of finding these 'traits' through the use of character-based work, searching to enable these various fools within us to dance their stories, like a journey within our own archetypes.

...and one day looking inside I saw in that space between the belly and the chest a little ship from which my inner fools were leading my life....

About Yael Karavan
Performer and Director Yael Karavan was born in Israel and grew up in Florence, Paris and London. At the age of 13 she began an acting career in the National Theatre, television and films. In 1995 she began travelling through Europe, N.Y, Brazil and Japan searching to develop a contemporary physical language of expression bridging between east and west, dance and acting. Yael has studied with master-teachers and performers from all over the world including: Anton Adassinski and Tanya Khabarova from Russian theatre DEREVO, Philippe Gaulier, Philippe Genty, Monica Pagnieux, Jerzy Winnicki from the Grotowski Centre, Nigel Charnock from DV8, Sue Morrison (North American traditional Clown), Ricardo Puccetti from ‘Lume Teatro- Brazil and Butoh masters Kazuo Ohno, Tadashi Endo, Carlotta Ikeda, Yumiko Yoshioka, Akiko Motofuji and more. She has collaborated amongst others with Ephia from Djalma primordial science, Linda Remahl, Fran Barbe and Marie Gabriel Rotie. Her work is often described as visual poetry, Drawing on elements of Butoh, dance, mime, clown, physical and visual theatre. She explores the themes of memory, ‘presence’, metamorphoses, rhythm, intention, imagery and counterpoint as well as how to relate creatively to material, objects and space whilst constantly balancing on the fine line between the tragic and the comic.

She has created and performed 5 solo shows, touring world wide, and in 2006 was awarded the TEATRONETO prize for best performance with her solo The Way Home directed by Naomi Silman (Lume teatro- Brazil). She has been, amongst others, member of Derevo physical theatre company, Mamu Dance Theatre of Tadashi Endo, Ten-Pen Chi of Yumiko Yoshioka and Adapt-Theatre Picture Collision as well as collaborating with various artists, actors and Dancers internationally.

In 2010 she has created The Karavan Ensemble, an International Dance/ Physical theatre company based in Brighton with whom she has created A Ship of Fools for the Brighton Fringe.

Bread Oven Masterclass

As you might know, in September I'll be packing my bags for the Pyrenees, where Sofi and me are going to live. This is the result of a bit of dreaming combined with an amazing and generous offer of a house to live in for a while.

Exciting eh? But also sad, as well as saying good bye (for now!) to so many lovely people I'll have to kiss the Coachwerks bread oven (L'Inferno d'amour as she's also known) goodbye. Those of you who have helped me or just heard about the loooong mission involved in building the thing will understand why this is a bit of a premature break up...I forgive you for thinking I'm a bit daft!

So although my baking adventures at Coachwerks will be short lived, I'll leave for Spain feeling really happy if I can gather enough interested people to continue using the oven for baking, cooking, warming up the space or whatever.

Using the oven is really simple, but there are some things that are useful to know that will help... where to get free firewood, how to control the heat, how to burn without damaging the oven etc.

As some of you know, I'm also really keen to pass on my knowlege of baking to who ever is interested.

So I'm planning a day and a half introduction/workshop in all of these things from finding the wood to baking a loaf. I know some of you are already great bakers so please do bring your own ideas, dough, whatever. I'm thinking of it more as a baking session than class. Here's how it will be:

Saturday 3rd July, 3 - 6pm
Gathering and chopping firewood
Preparing Sourdough - stage 1

This session is for the enthusiasts, those who think they would like to really get involved... it's not essential for everyone

Sunday 4th July 11am - 6pm
Preparing the fire and getting the oven up to temperature
Sourdough - Stage 2
Other kinds of bread - maybe ciabatta, maybe some dark rye, possibly some pizza?
Eat!

Both days will be pretty easy and fun, I'll be there baking whatever so if you'd like to come along please do. If this sounds good but you can't make those days please let me know. I hope to be doing plenty more baking over the coming months so maybe you could join me another time.

Stray Signals is a monthly poetry, storytelling and performance event aiming to provide a platform for creatives to showcase experimental new works in any format or media. Half curated/half open programme, the focus is on fostering an atmosphere for creating original material, having fun, and testing things out.
